Having a Hungarian voice over is listening to one of the more specific languages used in Europe, not just in Hungary itself, but in a number of neighbouring countries and a large Hungarian diaspora worldwide.
Hungarian is considered as one of the hardest languages to learn, not only bearing the fact that its longest word that is general use has 44 letters! Actually, Hungarian is an agglutinative language, which means that various grammatical components – such as affixes and stems –can be added to a word to increase its length (and change its meaning). Thanks to this, words of over 100 letters have been created in the past. Staying true to its ancient roots, Hungarian contains a whopping 68% of its etymons, or original words. Also, it could be one of the rare languages that has two words for the color red.
Hungarian, whose official name is Magyar, is a Uralic language spoken in Hungary and parts of several neighbouring countries. It is the official language of Hungary and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. As with all Uralic languages, it s origins are traced to Asian roots. Its closest relatives are Khanty and Mansi, minority languages of Russia, spoken 2,000 miles away, east of the Ural mountains in northwestern Siberia. It is estimated that Hungarian has been separated from Khanty and Mansi for about 2,500-3,000 years. Linguists believe that the ancestors of modern Hungarians first migrated westward from the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains into the steppes of southern Russia in the 4th-6th centuries, and eventually moved further westward into the Danube basin west of the Carpathian Mountains in the 9th century.
There are around 10 million native speakers of Hungarian language in Hungary itself. It is also spoken by Hungarian minorities in the neghbouring countries of Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Ukraine and Slovakia. There are also many people of Hungarian origin in the UK and other European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia. It is estimated that the total number of speakers is around 13 million.
Hungarian is a highly inflected language in which nouns can have up to 238 possible forms. The dialects of Hungarian identified by Ethnologue are: Alföld, West Danube, Danube-Tisza, King's Pass Hungarian, Northeast Hungarian, Northwest Hungarian, Székely and West Hungarian. These dialects are, for the most part, mutually intelligible. The Hungarian Csángó dialect, which is mentioned but not listed separately by Ethnologue, is spoken primarily in Bacău County in eastern Romania.
The voice characteristics of Hungarian language are based on the fact that its alpahabet has 44 letters and that some letters have two or three parts. Even more so, the voice characteristics and pronunciation is dictated by the fact that there are 14 vowels in the Hungarian language, compared to five that exist in English.
Primary stress is always on the first syllable of a word, as in Finnish and the neighbouring Slovak and Czech. There is a secondary stress on other syllables in compounds: viszontlátásra ('goodbye') is pronounced /ˈvisontˌlaːtaːʃrɒ/. Elongated vowels in non-initial syllables may seem to be stressed to an English-speaker, as length and stress correlate in English.
